It’s being rumoured that Joaquin Phoenix might do Joker 2, however, he’s reportedly asking for a lot of money from Warner Bros. Pictures to do it. This rumour comes courtesy of industry insider Daniel Richtman, and it’s also been reported by other outlets in the past.
This has been talked about for quite some time now. There have been reports in the past that Joaquin Phoenix was asking for $50 million to do the sequel. That’s almost as much as the first movie’s entire budget. However, he is an Oscar-winner now, so it does make sense for him to raise his prices.
I would also think that the real thing that would convince Phoenix to return to the role would be the film’s script. If he believes that Joker 2’s script is good enough, then I would expect to see him return to the role.

Here’s what Daniel Richtman said in his recent Patreon post in which he claimed that Joaquin Phoenix would only do Joker 2 if he were to be paid a lot more money by the studio:
Phoenix wants a lot of money to come back to Joker 2 and it looks like he’ll get it.
Again, as I stated above, the rumours have been around for quite some time that he’s been asking for about $50 million to return to the movie. Whether or not Warner Bros. would be OK paying that much remains to be seen.
