When Joaquin Phoenix was recently asked to comment on being in the running to play the iconic DC Comics villain, The Joker, in an upcoming movie, the actor responded that he had no idea what the interviewer was talking about.
This whole, ‘who is going to play the Joker?’ thing is becoming more and more complicated. We heard a few days back that Joachin Phoenix was in talks to star as the Joker in the Todd Phillips directed Joker movie, which sounded like excellent casting to me. Before Jared Leto was cast as the iconic villain, Phoenix’s name was mentioned.
Yet, it looks like those stories may not have been 100% accurate, at least if Phoenix himself is to be believed. During an interview with the French film site, AlloCiné, the actor was asked to comment on playing the Joker, and he seemed very confused by the question. He didn’t even know what movie the journalist was referring to.
“What movie about a Joker?” he queried. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” This could be taken as Phoenix keeping mum on the whole thing. However, his expression tells another story. He seems genuinely bemused by the question. Surely he must have heard the rumours. Maybe he lives in a wifi-free zone with no access to the outside world, but at least, according to this interview, the actor has no idea about what’s being written about him.
I would love to see him sink his teeth into the role. I think he’d be perfect for it. Don’t get me wrong, Leto has potential in the role, but he lacks that gravitas that Phoenix has in abundance. He also suffered from a weak script. This Joker spinoff movie sounds like a much more exciting prospect, especially with Martin Scorsese producing.
