Finally, a live-action series featuring Green Lanterns comes into the DCU under Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. James Gunn described the new live-action series in his Twitter video post. Deadline also added that DC Studios’ co-CEO Peter Safran revealed that the new series is coming to HBO Max.
The new DCU seems to be loving the Green Lanterns, as this new live-action series is even different from the one that Greg Berlanti was working on. It seems as though that show might have been cancelled. We still don’t know officially what happened to it.

James Gunn describes the new series as:
A big premiere HBO television series. This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan. …and a few other Lanterns peppered in there. But this is really a terrestrial-based tv show. …the two Green Lanterns are space cops watching over precinct Earth.
Peter Safran is quoted saying:
Our vision for this is True Detective. …it’s got two of our favorite Green Lanterns …it plays a really big role in the main story that we’re telling across our film and television. This is a very important show for us.
Gunn added that in the series, the lead characters would discover a terrifying mystery that ties to the greater story of the DCU. In the comic books, both characters have the background of men in uniforms who did not shy away from fighting people of authority if it meant it was to protect others and uphold peace.

Hal Jordan was a former military test pilot who accepted dying Abin Sur’s wish to be his replacement in the Green Lantern Corps. Meanwhile, John Stewart was a former Marine who has exceptional skills as a marksman and, upon discharge, acquired a degree in architecture.
Throughout Stewart’s life, Guardians of the Universe has kept watch over him as they have identified him to have the capacity to be an invaluable member of the Green Lantern Corps.
More than being a series that will feature both characters’ origins in the DCU, bringing the Guardians of the Universe into the big picture could very well be the carrier of the mystery that Gunn and Safran are pertaining to.
Definitely, these green space cops are long overdue to appear in a live-action series for big or small screens. I am glad this is happening soon. I just hoped they could have done this sooner. Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
