HBO Max Content CEO Casey Bloys disclose that House of the Dragon season 2 arrives in mid-2024 at the soonest. He even discloses that the show won’t make it to the 2024 Emmy season, which ends on May 31st. Apparently, the production for the much-awaited second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series is just in the beginning stages.

Last year, the Game of Thrones prequel series set the streaming world on fire with compelling storytelling of the most powerful house in Westeros. The series is based on George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood novel, which dates nearly 200 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons.

The series heavily bases its story on the events that lead to the fall of the House Targaryen through its war of succession that the world knows as The Dance Of The Dragons. Starring Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess / Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke as Queen / Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower.

The Targaryen series also made household names out of Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as the younger characters Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower, respectively.

Variety features the CEO sharing what viewers can look forward to from the streaming giant. We have previously reported that production for the second season could start in April this year and that it is highly likely that the second season will premiere in 2024. Now, Bloy has given slightly clearer information about the production that is underway. The article states:

HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys confirms that sometime in 2024 “is a good guess” for the hit series’ return — although he’s mum on the exact time of year.

…the show won’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season (which ends its eligibility period on May 31, 2024) — so expect a likely return in summer 2024.

Even while the first season was still in its early episodes, fans have revived hope in HBO’s adaptation of Martin’s novels. Performances of the actors were very well received that even Martin commended Considine’s performance, saying that he was tempted to rewrite some of King Viserys’ scenes in the book.

With the author himself gushing about the adaptation, there is little wonder that House of the Dragon has more seasons to come. Despite the fact that readers and show fans already know what is coming up, interest and excitement is still there for the second season.

The show practically redeemed audiences’ impression of Game Of Thrones which started out spectacularly only to become lacklustre and, to some, an utter disappointment by the end of its run. Nevertheless, it was still the show that changed television forever. The seasons that clearly had a solid literary source in A Song Of Ice And Fire were its strongest until it lasted.

House of the Dragon season 1 boasts a certified fresh 100% on the Tomatometer with an audience score of 82%. Remarkable for a show that fans know what the end is going to be. It even broke HBO records as well. On whether there will be other spinoffs for Game Of Thrones, Bloys was pretty clear:

Remember to get ‘House of the Dragon’ following up from ‘Game of Thrones,’ we developed a lot of shows, shot a pilot, developed a bunch of scripts and we got ‘House of the Dragon’. To do that again is going to take the same amount of effort. You have to develop a lot of things, try things. You never know what’s going to work. So we’re currently doing that.

As for House of the Dragon season 2, knowing what is coming, other than winter, there is also that dreaded Blood and Cheese. It all only makes fans more focused on looking forward to seeing how they will deliver these scenes to the small screen.

In the meantime, there ise the literary treasure trove that can be read and re-read. Then season 1 that can be watched and re-watched on HBO Max. Many other resources online are also available for those who are getting more curious. But as in true Game of Thrones tradition, expect the unexpected. Hopefully, it all gets fans through the long wait for House of the Dragon Season 2.
