It’s been revealed that the search for Henry Cavill’s Superman replacement actually began back in 2018, which comes as a bit of a shock to me. This news comes to us via an article in Variety (via Screen Rant).
According to insiders in Variety’s new report, Warner Bros. Pictures actually started the search for Henry Cavill’s Superman replacement back in 2018. This means they would have started looking for a new Superman only a year after Justice League was released in cinemas.
It’s been an incredible emotional rollercoaster for us Superman and Henry Cavill fans. After the release of Black Adam, it looked like Cavill would be back as Superman.
He made a cameo appearance at the very end of the movie, and Cavill then took to Instagram to tell fans that he was going to be returning as the Man of Steel in a big way. However, it was then revealed that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be the co-CEOs of the newly-formed, DC Studios.
Gunn then revealed that Cavill was no longer going to be playing Superman in the future DC Universe movies, and the actor took to social media to reveal that the news was indeed true, much to our disappointment.

Now, let’s talk about that report from Variety. They revealed that the former head of Warner Bros., Tobey Emmerich, actually wanted a new Superman back in 2018. They even reported that the studio was actively searching for a new actor to play the Man of Steel in future projects.
They reported that Emmerich wanted anyone but Cavill in the role, and it’s not really explained why he didn’t want Cavill in the role anymore. Emmerich hasn’t made any comment about this story since it was published.
Moreover, Warner Bros. Discovery and James Gunn have been very silent as far as this story’s concerned, which leads me to believe that it’s correct. Gunn would usually take to Twitter to debunk any story about the DC Universe of DC Studios pretty much immediately after publication.
However, it does have to be said that this all took place before Gunn became the co-CEO of DC Studios, so maybe he thought that it wasn’t his place to comment. Moreover, it seems that Gunn would like to keep a good relationship with Cavill, as there’s still a possibility that he might play another character in the DC Universe moving forward.
Who could play Superman next?

So, who could play Superman next? That’s a very good question and one that we don’t have an answer to as of yet.
Gunn has already revealed that the Superman movie script he’s writing will feature a younger version of the character. However, he has reassured fans that it won’t be another origins story.
Gunn revealed that it’d feature more scenes of Clark Kent working as a reporter for The Daily Planet, which sounds pretty cool if you ask me. We’ll have to wait and see who they end up casting in the role.
