Henry Cavill was supposed to star in the upcoming Highlander reboot/sequel/remake. However, it’s now being reported that he’s dropped out of the project and is being replaced by Chris Hemsworth.
This report comes to us from Giant Freakin Robot, and I have to say that I think this might be a bit of a stretch. Why do I say that? Because, if this is really happening, then I would expect some of the other major Hollywood trades to have reported this news by now.
That said, I do wonder whether Cavill has opted to move away from the project. That part of the report would make sense because he’s going to be incredibly busy with his upcoming Warhammer 40K series.
The reason why he’s going to be so busy with that project is because he’s going to be overseeing the whole Warhammer cinematic universe. Amazon Studios is putting a lot of weight and money behind turning Warhammer into a huge franchise.
Could Henry Cavill really be leaving the Highlander project?

The agreement that Games Workshop (the company that owns and started Warhammer) made with Amazon Studios encompasses rights to the universe across TV series, film and likely games and animation.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso partnered with Cavill to secure the Warhammer 40,000 IP before taking it to Amazon Studios. Vertigo will executive produce with Cavill and GAW’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill alongside Amazon Studios.
Here’s what Cavill had to say of the news (via Deadline):
I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon Studios and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true.
Cavill seems to be more focused on Warhammer

Before this news was revealed, it was also announced that Cavill was going to be leaving The Witcher after Season 3. It was added that he was going to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
This is where Giant Freakin Robot’s report loses me a bit. I just don’t believe that Cavill would then drop out of another porject only to be replaced by another Hemsworth. It’s just too much of a coincidence.
However, what I do believe is that the Highlander project has been put on ice whilst Cavill gets to work on the Warhammer 40K project. They could very well be looking for another star to helm the movie.
Chad Stahelski was attached to direct the project. We’re just going to have to wait and see what ends up happening with this movie. I hope it does happen, but if this report of Cavill leaving the project is true, finding a replacement might not be that easy.
Chris Hemsworth would be a good choice, but he also stated recently that he’s going to be taking on fewer projects after a rather worrying health scare. So, something tells me that he might pass on the chance of starring in the Highlander reboot/remake/sequel.
