Gore Verbinski becomes yet another director to exit Fox’s Gambit movie which was supposed to star Channing Tatum as the titular superhero.
This Gambit movie project just seems to be cursed. Directors have been dropping left, right and centre. The film was originally going to be directed by Doug Liman who then left the project to make way for Rupert Wyatt who also left. Then Gore Verbinski came on-board and all seemed to be back on track. Channing Tatum was attached to star as Gambit, but then Disney bought Fox and everything was sent into uncertainty once again.
According to Deadline, Gore Verbinski has become the third director to leave the Gambit solo movie project. The site reports that the split was an amicable one and that Tatum is still attached to star. This means that Fox will be shopping for another director which has forced the studio to push film’s release date from February 14th, 2019 to June 7th, 2019. It’s not a massive push but they need to find someone quick otherwise this project will be DOA.
Nobody really knows what the problem really is with the Gambit movie. It just seems as if no one can quite figure out how to approach the character. Gambit was last seen on-screen in the awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine and was played by Taylor Kitch. He’s an interesting enough character in the X-Men universe and if done properly could make for a very interesting movie.
Channing Tatum is in my mind a good choice for the role but they’ve got to get the right director on-board and make sure that the script is perfect. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear later on down the line that the executives at Marvel and Disney may have had a hand in Verbinski’s departure but that’s just speculation.
