Giancarlo Esposito has revealed that he would love to play Professor X – aka Charles Xavier – in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor has already revealed that he’s been in talks with Marvel about potential roles. This came right off his attendance at Disney’s D23 Expo during which he turned up on the Lucasfilm stage to talk about The Mandalorian Season 3. He’ll be in that show, but he’s been very open about also wanting to play in the MCU universe.
The actor has been a fan-favourite choice for many roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’ve seen people say that he would be perfect for Doctor Doom in the Marvel movies. I think he would be a good shout for that role. Another role people seem to like him for is Magneto. However, he’s also been linked to the Professor X role, and many fans seem to think he’d be a good choice for the role. Esposito seems to agree with that take.

So, Esposito revealed that it was the petitions calling for him to play Professor X that convinced him to reach out to Marvel Studios directly to talk about the role. He asked Marvel whether they’d be interested in having him be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next Professor X. However, Marvel Studios told him that they weren’t quite ready to get into discussions about that particular role. Esposito revealed this bit of information during a recent fan Q&A event at Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon.
Fans have been demanding that Esposito should be cast as Professor X for quite some time online, and it seems as though both the actor and the studio have been taking notice. Here’s what Esposito had to say about the meeting with Marvel Studios:
When the fan casting started to blow up that they’d like to see me play Professor X….it got so huge, I finally had to have my people call Marvel and explain that, you know, this is a fan want and we’d love to work with you and they aren’t quite ready to get into that conversation. But when they are, I am here.

Moreover, in that same Q&A, the actor revealed that he was approached by Marvel’s head of its TV division, Louis D’Esposito, about a prospective role in Loki. However, the Breaking Bad actor revealed that he didn’t end up getting the part because he believes he “wasn’t the one who was chosen” even though he “would’ve maybe liked to do it.”
Moreover, Esposito seemed to suggest that he was approached to play a Loki variant in the series:
And they had come to me to play — possibly play Loki on the television side. And so I did not do that.
It really does seem as though Esposito and Marvel have been trying to work things out. Maybe one of the reasons why his Loki casting didn’t work out what because they have bigger plans for the actor in the MCU’s future. Could they be about to cast him as a Professor X variant? I really hope they do, because he would be perfect for the role. It’s now up to Marvel to put their money where their mouth is.
