Gerard Butler is one of my favourite actors of all time. Don’t ask me why. I just love watching all of his movies, and I think I’ve watched pretty much all of them. However, there was one movie he made that I actually think is a genuinely good film, and that’s a picture called Greenland.
The movie was released back in 2020, and Butler starred in the film alongside Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, and Hope Davis. In the movie, they portray a family who must fight for survival as a planet-destroying comet races to Earth. The movie is an apocalyptic thriller survival disaster film directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Chris Sparling.

I didn’t go to watch it when it was first released. I think it was COVID, and I wasn’t allowed to leave the house, so cinemas might have been closed at that time. However, I did get to catch the movie on Prime Video. I think it’s still on the streaming platform if you want to watch it. Anyway, it was soon revealed that the movie was going to be getting a sequel, which, given the way the first movie ended, was a bit of a shock.
In the movie, Gerard Butler’s John receives a text from the government in which he’s informed that he and his family have been selected to take shelter in an emergency unit. So, John and Allison have to race against time and the odds to get Nathan to safety. By the end of the film (spoilers by the way) the family manages to make it to the bunker in Greenland just before the commit hits – how fortunate.
Towards the very end of the picture, Gerard Butler’s character comes above ground for the first time in months. That’s when they realise that it’s now safe to start to rebuild, and this is what sets up the movie’s sequel, which is going to be called Greenland: Migration.

So, Variety revealed that the movie is going to start filming in April, and it’s been confirmed to us that the film has finally gone into production after a short delay. The movie will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who helmed the first picture in what is now a franchise. The movie has been written by Chris Sparling. It’s also been revealed that Deadpool and Deadpool 2 star Morena Baccarin will also return for the sequel.
Variety also confirmed that Sparling has co-written Greenland: Migration alongside Mitchell Lafortune. The media outlet also revealed that the sequel will be set after the comet has decimated earth. In the movie, we will be following the Garrity family once again, and they will be forced to embark on a perilous journey across what’s left of Europe to find a new home.
What do you make of this news? Are you looking forward to watching Gerard Butler in this upcoming sci-fi sequel once it’s finally released in cinemas? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this report.
We still don’t have a released date for Greenland: Migration. However, I would expect the film to be released sometime in 2025. It shouldn’t take too long to film and edit.
You can stream Greenland on Prime Video right now.
