To ensure the story of Firefly Lane was told in all its glory, showrunner Maggie Friedman said she made sure that season 2 was longer in length to achieve her vision. Talking to Glamour, she said:

Originally, season 2 was just going to be 10 episodes, but I was talking to one of the Netflix executives who’s been such a great champion of the show and said, ‘I know where the end of the story is.’

She continued:

I know exactly what I want it to be. I just want to make sure that we get there and don’t end on a cliffhanger and then something happens and we don’t complete it. I wanted to make sure that I got to tell the full story.

If you’ve read the books that the show is based on and watched until the very end of Firefly Lane Season 2, then it shouldn’t come as a shock to find out that there are no plans to make a third season.

Speaking to The Wrap, showrunner Maggie Friedman revealed:

We talked a lot about a lot of different versions in the writers room of how exactly the moment of [Kate’s] death was going to play out, and what we finally landed on was this idea that Kate was hanging on until she knew that everyone was going to be okay.

Firefly Lane has a sequel, but it’s a book

So, this means that we won’t get to see Tully (played by Katherine Heigl) and Kate (played by Sarah Chalke) return for a third season. However, there is a little bit of hope for fans of the series and the books. Firefly Lane actually got a sequel in the form of Fly Away. In the sequel, the characters deal with the aftermath of Kate’s death and its impact on their lives.

Per the official listing for the book, the sequel picks up several years following the death of Kate, with Tully working as a celebrity news report and presenter but sadly hitting rock bottom. We also pick up with Marah, who struggles alongside her father, Johnny.

That said, it’s also been revealed that there aren’t any plans to adapt the sequel book. Friedman revealed this during an interview with The Wrap in which she stated that there are no plans at the current moment.

The writer of the novels, Kristin Hannah, however, has expressed interest in a third book, saying, “I had originally seen Firefly Lane as the start of a trilogy.”

So, this means that you could get to read two more books and immerse yourselves in this world for a little bit longer. However, sadly, there will be no Firefly Lane Season 3 on Netflix.
