EXCLUSIVE: David Ayer’s Suicide Squad Cut Is Happening And Coming To HBO Max

UPDATE: David Ayer has taken to Twitter to claim that his cut of Suicide Squad is not coming to HBO Max. We are standing by our sources, but we wanted to make sure his tweet was mentioned.

It’s been revealed to us by multiple sources that David Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad is happening and will be coming to HBO Max. There has been talk for ages about whether David Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad would be coming to HBO Max. Well, now my sources have confirmed that it is coming and it isn’t too far away from release.

This is something that I’ve been trying to find out about for quite some time now. David Ayer’s been very vocal about there being his own cut of Suicide Squad out there somewhere. He spoke of how his Suicide Squad movie was “beaten into a comedy”. Here’s what he had to say about that on Twitter:

This [Comic-Con] trailer nailed the tone and intention of the film I made. Methodical. Layered. Complex, beautiful and sad. After the BVS reviews shell shocked the leadership at the time, and the success of Deadpool – My soulful drama was beaten into a ‘comedy.’

Anyway, before we get into everything that Ayer’s said about his cut of Suicide Squad, let’s see what my sources told me about it. I always ask my sources whether I can direct quote them, and many of them do agree to this. Here’s what the first source to reach out to me said about David Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad:

Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad does exist and WarnerMedia and HBO Max are looking at releasing it on HBO Max at some point either next year or 2022.

That was the first I heard about this actually being a thing. A second source added:

David Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad is coming to HBO Max. Word around here is it’ll be released near the end of 2021 and will feature a lot more of Jared’s Joker and Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

I pressed them for a bit more information, and the first source added that the movie would be longer than what Ayer’s very first version of the movie was:

At the moment, Ayer’s cut’s runtime is nearing 3 hours. That could be cut down slightly. Although it could also be released in multiple parts – like Zack’s Justice League.

I did ask other sources I’ve worked with in the past with links to WarnerMedia about this. Many of them confirmed that David Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad was coming to HBO Max. The overall consensus was that it would be available towards the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

That would make sense since it would be coming out after James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Gunn’s movie is scheduled for release on August 6th, 2021. Therefore, having Ayer’s cut of his Suicide Squad movie be released after Gunn’s seems to indicate that WarnerMedia wants to leave room for the new Suicide Squad movie to breathe.

There’s also Rocksteady’s upcoming Suicide Squad video game to come, called Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. It does seem as though DC and Warner Bros. are keen on keeping the Suicide Squad firmly in people’s minds.

I – like many other people – have been very interested to see what Ayer’s original vision was for his movie. He’s often said that the poor reviews for Batman v Superman meant that Warner Bros. Pictures drastically changed the tone of his movie.

His film was much darker in tone, with much more footage of Joker and Harley Quinn, and this new cut of Suicide Squad which is coming to HBO Max will feature almost all of it. However, he did admit that Jay Hernandez’s Diablo’s story arc was the one battle he managed to win. Here’s what Ayer said in a tweet when he was asked about it:

It was the only battle I won. Decision makers were allergic to Diablo killing his family. Look at my films – death, guilt, redemption and emancipation from toxic relationships are themes I explore as a filmmaker. The human soul is beautiful and complex.

I will update you as soon as I hear anything else about David Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad. If you take one thing away from this article it has to be that it is coming to HBO Max.
