Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has finally talked about James Gunn’s decision to remove Henry Cavill as Superman for the new DC Universe. Late last year, Black Adam was released in theatres, and it got every DCEU fan excited with the reveal of Cavill returning as Superman.

Not only that, the film teased a future where we would see Black Adam would have a face-off against Superman. Immediately after the premiere, Johnson himself kept telling the world of the return of Superman. Not long after that, Cavill himself made the announcement that he was back as the Man of Steel. Considering he hasn’t returned to the role since his appearance in Justice League, it took five years for him to come back.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran were given the position of co-CEOs in the newly formed DC Studios’, many wondered what Gunn might be planning for the very much-awaited superhero. Some even wondered if Zack Snyder would return for Man of Steel 2 since Gunn and Snyder worked together before on the Dawn of the Dead remake in 2004.

A month after Gunn and Safran got into their roles in DC Studios, it was revealed that Henry Cavill wouldn’t be coming back as the Man of Steel. Gunn plans to move forward with a new younger Superman with his upcoming film, Superman: Legacy, which is said will be the start of the new DC Universe.

We won’t lie. This was devastating to many people, even non-fans of the DCEU. Many fans wanted him to return. During the Oscars, Variety’s Marc Malkin was able to talk to Dwayne Johnson about Henry Cavill not returning as Superman.

While Johnson didn’t talk directly about Cavill himself, he does talk about how he felt about the situation, saying:

All that I could do, and all that we could do when we were making Black Adam, was to put our best foot forward and surround ourselves with the best people and deliver the best movie we could.

It’s almost like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships and your head coach wins championships and then a new owner comes in and says, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going to go with somebody new.

Johnson was proud to tell the world that he and his team ensured that Cavill was back and that the future was bright. For sure, the events that transpired were not easy for many, especially for the ones who made it happen.

The Rock has fought for Cavill to return. And as soon as he was able to get it done, DC decided to reboot the DC Universe. But for some reason, the DCU reboot implied that they would retain some actors. So far, the only ones confirmed to be out of DCU’s future are Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.

At the moment, this is confusing a lot of people. Some have even just wholly lost faith in Gunn’s new DCU, which hasn’t really started, which I think is completely wrong.

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is not totally out of the new DC Universe yet. Right now, it’s just confirmed that DC has no current plans for the character in DC’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. For now, both Johnson and Cavill have moved on.

Johnson just finished filming his Christmas movie Red One. His own company, Seven Bucks Productions, has a long lineup of projects in which, most likely, he will be involved in. The Rock has no shortage of things to do.

Meanwhile, Cavill is also building up his projects as he starts producing his own shows, especially with Warhammer 40k, which is based on a popular sci-fi miniature war game. He will be seen in the upcoming Matthew Vaughn film Argylle. Also, Cavill is currently filming The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It is reported that he is also in talks for Hobbs and Shaw 2, Call of Duty and James Bond.

Some are still hoping that Cavill and possibly Johnson will return to the DCU at some point. There are hopes that DC Studios is planning to do Kingdom Come or Crisis on Infinite Earths which could make the DCEU characters meet the new DCU heroes. That’s the hope, but we don’t really know for sure.
