It’s being rumoured that Disney might be looking at buying up MGM Studios, which would mean that Disney would basically control the whole of Hollywood. This rumour comes from Daniel Richtman’s Patreon page.
OK, so before I get into this story, I want to first mention its source. Daniel Richtman is often referred to as an insider. However, he hides all of his scoops behind a pay wall and shares a lot of stuff on there. I do find this to be slightly strange, but to each his own, I suppose.
All this to say that I’m not always 100% sure that his information is genuine just because of the sheer number of scoops he posts. It would be virtually impossible for someone to be so well connected in Hollywood and get all of this information. Right, now that’s out of the way, I can start talking about how this rumour is utter nonsense.

The main reason why I do not believe this could ever happen is because Disney at the moment just doesn’t have the liquidity to purchase another studio. Also, I’m not sure if the US government would let the deal go through. It would mean that Disney would be an even bigger monopoly, and they’re acquisition of 20th Century Fox Studios already almost didn’t go through because it meant that Disney would have too much control over the entertainment industry.
The other issue is that MGM’s film and television assets are still valued at over $5 billion which is still a bit too expensive, I believe, for Disney at the moment, especially with the financial hit of the pandemic. That said, if they do acquire the studio, Disney would end up getting over 4000 titles in their back catalogue which they could end up putting on Disney Plus.
Then there’s also the fact that Disney would own the James Bond franchise, which is MGM’s only remaining lucrative property.
