DC Comics’ Shazam! movie is now officially in production and director David F. Sandberg and its star, Zachary Levi, are now hard at work on bringing this superhero to the big screen.
This Shazam! movie is quickly becoming my most anticipated DC Comics movies coming out in the next few years. It stars Zachary Levi as the titular Shazam who is easily one of DC’s most wacky superheroes. First off, Shazam only turns into Shazam when a young orphan called Billy Batson says the word “Shazam”. He’s then imbued with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.
The comic book hero also has a bit of a complicated past full of legal battles with Marvel Comics. This was because he was initially called Captain Marvel and we all know that that’s also the name of a popular Marvel hero who’s going to be played by Brie Larson on the big screen in 2019.
Legal issues aside, Shazam has remained one of DC Comics’ most well-known superheroes yet the comic book character never got his own movie, that is, until now. Zachary Levi (you might know him from the hit TV series Chuck, as Fandral in the Thor movies or even as the voice of Flynn Rider in Disney’s Tangled), will be bringing Shazam to life on the big screen and it seems as though DC and Warner Bros. will be taking a different approach with this film.
We’ve come to know DC Comics movies as rather dark and depressing affairs, but Shazam! promises to be entirely different and slightly out of left-field which is precisely how it should be and is exactly what the studio needs. Director David F. Sandberg’s previous work includes Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, both of which were decent horror movies. However, this promises to be quite different from what he’s done before and will be a comedy rather than a horror movie.
Sandberg revealed on Instagram that production on the movie has begun and I cannot wait to see the final product. Shazam! will be in UK cinemas on April 5th, 2019. Are you looking forward to it? Let us know in the comments below.
