David Ayer has taken to Twitter to reveal that he feels that there’s a very strong chance that DC Studios and its new leadership (James Gunn and Peter Safran) could release his cut of Suicide Squad! This is huge news and I’m sure that many of you will be hoping that Gunn and Safran do decide to have the Ayer Cut released. The question I have is will they opt to release the movie in cinemas or on streaming? I’m still not sure which would be the best release strategy for the movie.
Here’s what the filmmaker had to say when a fan asked him on Twitter whether there was a chance that Gunn might opt to release his cut of the 2016 Suicide Squad movie:
He’s always been a good guy. Has been incredibly respectful to me. As far as my cut – Of course I want it seen. And I believe there’s a real shot at it. It just won’t be tomorrow.

This all comes after there was a huge campaign on social media to try and get DC Studios and Warner Bros Discovery to release the Ayer Cut. There’s been a lot written about Ayer cut of his 2016 Suicide Squad movie. It was revealed recently that one of the main people behind the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement was shown the movie by Ayer himself. This also revealed that the movie is basically finished and ready to be released.
The film that was released in 2016 was not the movie that the filmmaker wanted audiences to see. His film was very different, but Warners panicked when they saw his cut and opted to hire a company that cuts trailers to re-edit the movie in its entirety, and in the end, the movie that was released was a complete and utter mess. It felt like a bunch of music videos all spliced together in an effort to make a comprehensible film, which it wasn’t.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have a lot on their plate right now

Ever since that fact was revealed by the director himself, there have been calls online for Warner Brothers to release the movie that Ayer wanted us all to see. It sounds like the film is a lot better, and James Gunn himself has actually voiced support for Ayer and his cut of the film. James Gunn went on to make The Suicide Squad which was released in 2021 and I thought that film was pretty darn good! However, Gunn has always been very supportive of his fellow filmmaker, and recently revealed that he and Safran are listening to the fans.
Here’s what Gunn had to say on the matter via Twitter:
Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic & respectful.

Gunn then added:
As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.

It seems as though something is cooking inside of DC Studios and I am very excited to see what they are planning.
