Should the MCU have more of Dave Bautista’s Drax?
When Guardians Of The Galaxy hit cinema screens back in 2014 it was a real breath of fresh air for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
It was the first time we had unique and often comedic characters set in a galactical environment within the MCU.
However, one of the real surprises that came from the first Guardians movie also the performance of Dave Bautista (former WWE star turned Actor) in the role of Drax.
The character has since appeared in four Marvel pictures including The Avengers series and is looking at perhaps his final appearance in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 directed by James Gunn.
In an interview with Collider, Bautista expressed that he feels Marvel and Walt Disney “dropped the ball” on Drax.
Speaking candidly about what the role has meant to him and the doors it opened, he also expressed that the character has a great back story.
However, he added that he, “really wished they would have invested more in Drax, personally. Because I think Drax has more of a story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory which they dropped the ball on.”
The actor went on to state the studios ditched the destructive powerful side of Drax and focused purely on the comedic aspects as time went on.
We can’t argue that that actually isn’t the right call from what we’ve seen across the films, it has worked well.
Dave Bautista thinks Marvel missed the boat on Drax
But we missed a huge boat on that character and I don’t think it’ll ever come back around.
With the rise of Disney Plus, we are seeing more time dedicated to characters outside of the movies in series such as WandaVision and Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
Could it be possible for Drax if this is his final outing, may return either as a cameo or in series on the streaming platform?
Bautista isn’t shy of work coming either way, he’s just been confirmed as reuniting with James Bond star Daniel Craig in the Knives Out sequel.
We already know that James Gunn confirmed the third film will delve more into Rocket’s backstory as part of the plotline.
In a tweet in April 2021, he stated:
I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along
Is Bautista right? Should Marvel have given us more of Drax and more history behind the character?
Can we get something on Disney Plus, or at least more of the character across any of the films or series?
Do we need an origin story for every MCU character?
