It’s been revealed by one of the major stars of the Netflix Daredevil series that Marvel Studios is working on a new The Punisher series for Disney Plus with Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle. Who’s the person that has let this news slip? None other than Rosario Dawson.
Now, before I continue with this story, it has to be stated that Dawson has since retracted her comments, but it’s too little too late. The proverbial cat’s out of the bag as far as this new Punisher series is concerned.
So, let’s go over what Dawson actually had to say about a new Punisher series being in the works for Disney Plus. It all happened during Rosario Dawson’s appearance at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.
During this appearance, the Ahsoka and Daredevil actress she gave some really interesting updates regarding Jon Bernthal‘s return to the MCU. Dawson claimed that she was very excited to hear that Punisher is returning mainly because that was the only Netflix show where she didn’t appear.
Seems as though a new Punisher series starring Jon Bernthal is indeed in the works

So, it would seem as though Dawson has heard that Disney and Marvel are working on a new Punisher series and that it’ll see Jon Bernthal return as Frank Castle. Here’s what she had to say on the matter:
I hadn’t heard that announcement, but I found out yesterday that the Punisher was happening again. So, I feel like it’s my second chance, because that’s the only one of the shows I wasn’t in and I love Jon Bernthal. So, lets all make it happen collectively guys
It must be stated, that since making this statement, Dawson has since retracted her comments, stating that she has no real idea what’s going on inside of Marvel Studios. Here’s what she had to say (via a Tweet) on her previous statement about a new Punisher series being in the works:
I can’t be trusted…! Getting intel from fans during signings is iffy apparently. My bad. I get excited. Confirmation is key when you’re told what you want to hear…

Is Rosario Dawson telling the truth about The Punisher series reboot?

So, what’s really going on here? I actually think it’s all pretty obvious. Rosario Dawson let slip something she shouldn’t have, and was then directly contacted by Marvel’s PR team and was told to make a statement on social media.
This actually happened with us when we got to interview David Hayter, who revealed to us that a new Daredevil series was in the works over at Marvel Studios. We then posted the interview and the article, and Hayter made a statement on Twitter saying something very similar to what Dawson just said. You can have a look at what Hayter said about his Daredevil series reboot comments below.
Since this seems to be trending…
No, I did not “confirm” a Daredevil reboot.
I mistakenly thought I’d read in the trades that it was happening, and I would love to see it. (And yes, I’d love to write it.)
But I have no inside information whatsoever.https://t.co/jfPkQu76kx pic.twitter.com/TJtltS0nuO

It’s interesting to see that only a few months on, that new Daredevil reboot was announced by Kevin Feige on the Comic-Con stage. It’s called Daredevil: Born Again, and it’ll see Charlie Cox return as Matt Murdock.
We were informed back in September 2021 that a new Punisher series was in development and that it would be quite a violent show. This seems to have been an important factor in ensuring Bernthal’s return to the role.
He’s stated in the past that he would only come back to the role if it stayed true to the character. This means that Frank has to be as violent as he was in the in Netflix show. It seems as though Marvel Studios is starting to make TV-MA-rated content for Disney Plus, and this new Punisher series will be one of those mature-rated MCU series on the streaming platform.
