Steven DeKnight, the former showrunner of Netflix’s Daredevil series, is looking to make a Moon Knight series in the future.
Moon Knight is a character that people have wanted to do something with for quite some time now. James Gunn tweeted back in January 2017 that he had pitched a Moon Knight movie to Marvel, but nothing’s happened since. But now another name has stepped into the Moon Knight ring. Steven DeKnight, the former Daredevil showrunner, has expressed his interested in making a Moon Knight tv show.
He revealed this during an interview with IGN. “I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at Moon Knight at some point,” DeKnight said while discussing possible properties that would make him want to return to the Marvel-Netflix universe.
“There are so many characters that I love in the Marvel universe. Really, for me, it would be about schedule. My schedule these days, as you imagine, is a little tight. God, you know, when I signed onto Daredevil, I expressed an interest in Iron Fist and the Punisher, which I both loved. I’d love to see Moon Knight get a little bit of love. Great, great character.”
But who is Moon Knight I hear you ask? Moon Knight is not totally unlike Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. Before he became Moon Knight, he was known as Marc Spector, and he was a former CIA operative-turned-mercenary who died and then was resurrected by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Spector is granted enhanced strength, endurance and reflexes when the night descends, and his powers become even greater when the moon is full – a bit like a werewolf. He’s come into contact with many Marvel characters including Werewolf by Night (naturally), Spider-Man, and the Defenders.
DeKnight went on to talk about how he became involved in Netflix’s Marvel series in the first place. “I’ve watched them all. I mean, I loved my time there. It was interesting, I actually came into season one of Daredevil to help out my old buddies, Drew Goddard and Jeph Loeb,” DeKnight recalled.
“I went into that season one of Daredevil with the understanding I could only be there for a year, because I was going off to do this feature. And we were actually in the process of putting that feature together when Mary [Parent, Legendary Entertainment Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production] surprised me with the notion of directing Pacific Rim 2 instead, which I was delighted for.”
He finished off by saying that he still watches all the Marvel Netflix shows. “I watch all of the Marvel Netflix shows. I love the guys at Marvel, I love the people at Netflix, and I think there are some fantastic shows. Especially Luke Cage, which I really, really enjoyed.”
