Cyberpunk 2077’s Character Creation Tool Will Include Non-binary Genders

CD Projekt Red has revealed that Cyberpunk 2077’s character creation tool will include non-binary gender options after people were shocked by the way one of the game’s ads portrayed a transgender character.

Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the games of E3 and Keanu Reeves’ cameo appearance during Microsoft’s conference promoting it certainly helped things.

However, there was a bit of controversy surrounding it afterwards, and it was all to do with the way the game portrayed a transgender character during one of its ads.

Many people took offence to the way the ad fetishized and even dehumanized trans people. However, CD Projekt Red has since come out and revealed that they would be addressing the issue as soon as possible and added that they never intend to offend people.

To begin with, CD Projekt Red’s Art Director Kasia Redesiuk told Polygon that the ad was meant to be a satire, and Kasia went on to add that they wanted to create more acceptance for trans people as well as those with non-binary genders.

CD Projekt Red’s Quest Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, then told Gamasutra that Cyberpunk 2077’s character creation tool would give players as many options as possible, including non-binary options.

“One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn’t show in the demo yet, because as you mentioned it’s a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization in the beginning of the game as we can,” he told Gamasutra.

“For example, we want to do this thing where, as you create your character, after you choose the body type, you can, for example, use physical traits as you build your face that could be assigned to a man or a woman.”

Tomaszkiewicz then added: “The idea is to mix all of those [options] up, to give them to the players, as they would like to build it,” he explained.

“Same goes for the voice. We wanted to separate this out, so the players can choose it freely.”

“We are paying a lot of attention to it, we do not want anyone to feel like we are neglecting this, or treating it wrongly,” he finished.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be available to play on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Microsoft Windows on April 16, 2020.
