Chris Rock has pretty much slammed Will Smith’s apology after what’s become the most iconic slap the world has ever seen! The slap was quite literally heard around the world, and the basis for millions of tweets, videos and memes and furious social media discussions from the Oscars back in the spring of 2022 hasn’t been forgotten.
Will Smith recently apologised for his actions over video via social media which many deemed as a way for Smith to return to the limelight and begin rebuilding his reputation. The Academy Award winner who is yet to speak to comedian Chris Rock face to face posted his apology via YouTube and has been seen by more than 3.7m people.
Chris Rock for the most part hasn’t responded and remained quiet about the whole ordeal, apart from a few comical discussions in his recent stand-ups. But that’s no longer the case as this past weekend at London’s O2 arena taking part in a tour alongside fellow comedian Dave Chapelle when discussing the incident, he responded to his apology.
What did Chris Rock say about Will Smith’s apology after the slap?

Here’s what the comedian had to say about Will Smith’s recent apology:
Fuck your hostage video.
Rock then referred to Will Smith as “Surge Smith”. The reference of Surge, of course, refers to former Death Records label executive ‘Surge Knight’ who is currently in jail for voluntary manslaughter for 28 years. Honestly, I think that’s a bit harsh on Chris Rock’s behalf.
Do you think Will Smith’s apology to Chris Rock is enough?

The question remains, do you think that Will Smith’s apology in that video is anywhere near enough? As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think it is. However, what I will say is that the comedian’s career has seen a bit of an uptick after the slap. His stand-up tour was sold out after the slap, and I’m pretty sure that Will Smith’s actions had something to do with it.
Now, we’ve just got to wait and see what ends up happening between the pair moving forward. Judging by Rock’s reaction to Smith’s ‘apology’ video, I don’t think he’s ready to let bygones be bygones. Watch this space!
As for Will Smith’s career after winning the Oscar for his performance in King Richard, it’s been in a state of flux. He had a bunch of projects lined up, but most of them have either been cancelled or postponed. Smith was also forced to step down as a member of the Academy. That doesn’t mean that he can no longer be nominated for Oscars, but it does mean that he cannot vote and also he won’t be able to attend the ceremonies for the foreseeable future.
It’s going to be really interesting to see how things develop from this point onwards. I also wonder whether the Academy will end up letting Smith back in after some time has passed.
