Cara Dune Still Alive In The Mandalorian Says Creator

It’s been revealed by The Mandalorian’s creator, Dave Filoni, that Cara Dune is still alive and well in the galaxy far, far away. But the question is, will Lucasfilm ever bring the character back? I’m not so sure.

This all comes after it was revealed that Disney and Lucasfilm opted to fire Gina Carano from The Mandalorian series after she repeatedly posted some rather questionable things on social media. It was reported that the House Of Mouse had issued Carano with a warning before they eventually fired her.

However, Carano just couldn’t help herself and ended up posting something on her social media account that Disney and Lucasfilm couldn’t ignore. There have been calls for Disney to bring her back to the role, but it seems like Carano’s time in the galaxy far, far away came to an end with The Mandalorian Season 2.

During an interview with to Deadline, The Mandalorian’s executive producer, Rick Famuyiwa, stated the character will remain alive in the Star Wars galaxy. Here’s what he had to say on the issue:

“Cara was a big part and continues as a character to be part of the world. It had to be addressed in the creative and [Jon Favreau] took the time to think about that. It was something that was discussed as we knew it was going to have impact on the show, but at the same time, what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters — Din Djarin and Grogu — so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians.

And according to Dave Filoni, the series is simply moving in a direction that takes the story away from whatever Cara Dune is up to. Here’s what Filoni had to say on the matter during the same interview:

It’s a big galaxy and we have many characters in it — many characters are fighting for their screen time. We’ll just have to see as the season unfolds what the adventures are, but it’s a great character, someone who was vital to Din Djarin’s beginnings; we’ll see if he has evolved beyond that.” He adds: “Now Season 3 is mainly dealing with Mandalorians and the Mandalorian saga, the Mandalorian tale.

Filoni then went on to add the following:

[There’s] different characters he’s met since Bo-Katan [who] take a lot more prominence, which makes sense where his arc is going, the story of him and Grogu specifically.

Could Cara Dune be recast in the Star Wars universe?

There have been reports that Lucasfilm might be looking to recast Cara Dune for future Star Wars projects. However, those reports haven’t been validated by any of the major Hollywood trades, so it seems like it might not be on the cards, at least not for the moment.

I liked the character and thought that Gina Carano was a decent choice to play the role. However, I think it would be too tricky to bring Carano back to play the role now, and there would be too much backlash against Disney and Lucasfilm should they recast the role.

It’s a shame because the character was going to play an essential part in the now-cancelled Mandalorian spinoff series, Rangers Of The New Republic. That series was reportedly going to feature Cara Dune and Bo-Katan, but Lucasfilm had to bin the project after all the Carano drama.
