Netflix has been on somewhat of a role recently with its sports-focussed programmes – part of a wider trend among streaming services.
Whether you’re watching the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds-fronted series Welcome to Wrexham or the smash-hit F1 series Drive to Survive, the high-octane thrill and tumultuous experience associated with professional sports has never been more apparent.
That is why Break Point was so highly anticipated upon its release in 2023.
The tennis documentary promised an inside look at the ATP and WTA tour, exposing the inner workings of the locker room for the first time.
Break Point was popular for various reasons, especially considering betting on tennis is popular in the UK – with the best sites offering extensive betting markets on everything from the number of aces to the overall winners of the largest tournaments.
Ultimately, however, the series won’t be renewed for a third season. Break Point struggled to hit the record numbers of some of the more popular sports documentaries, but this isn’t the only reason why it most likely won’t be renewed.

Break Point is similar to other Netflix productions, like Six Nations Full Contact, focussing on a behind-the-scenes look at professional sports.
The documentary series launched in 2023, focussing on the professional tennis world and trying to illuminate the inner workings by following dozens of players during the season.
The main focus is on the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, but Break Point goes far beyond this.
In fact, the series was particularly lauded for its focus on players’ personal lives, something that isn’t talked about enough in the high-stakes world of professional tennis.
Break Point offered a glimpse into the extremely gruelling schedules these players must go through, making a mockery of any claims that professional tennis is less demanding than other sports.
The documentary series was also notable for its examination of the generational shift happening over the last few years, with new players popping up to try and disrupt the traditional heavyweights like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

With the critical reception for Break Point continuing on a downward trend, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the show won’t be renewed for a third season.
Some of the players involved with the series, like Casper Ruud, were also reportedly underwhelmed with the eventual result.
As a result, the appetite among players and viewers for a third season simply isn’t there.

Don’t let the absence of a third series of Break Point get you down as there are plenty more top-rated sports documentaries to choose from instead.
Below is a round-up of some of the best ones.
- Welcome to Wrexham: this documentary series explores the takeover of Wrexham AFC by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Elhenney. The pair are determined to elevate the world’s third-oldest club to the higher tiers of English football. So far, they’ve done very well¾and so has the series shown on Disney+.
- Drive to Survive: this Formula One-inspired series almost single-handedly changed the fortunes of the at-the-time struggling motorsport. Critics have been very complimentary of the thrilling nature of the series and its interesting look at behind-the-scenes action. The airing of team radio transmissions is particularly interesting, offering a unique insight into the world’s premier motor racing competition.
- Sunderland ‘Til I Die: one of the first documentaries following a club for an entire season, Sunderland ‘Til I Die unfortunately chronicled the demise of Sunderland as they were relegated from the Championship.
