It seems as though the upcoming Blade movie might have found its director. It’s being reported that Marvel Studios might be looking at Elegance Bratton to direct the picture. This report comes to us via The Cosmic Circus, and I think this would be an excellent choice. Bratton is an up-and-coming director, and I’m just hoping that this Blade movie ends up being made because I love the character so much, and he deserves to be a part of the MCU.
This movie has been in a state of flux for quite some time. Marvel had originally hired Bassam Tariq to helm the picture. However, he ended up leaving the project due to “creative differences”. This is an excuse that a lot of directors use when they leave Marvel projects. The likes of Edgar Wright, Scott Derrickson and Patty Jenkins all left Marvel movie projects due to “creative differences”. It seems as though directors don’t often see eye-to-eye with Marvel Studios. I’m not surprised really.

Anyway, Marvel Studios ended up taking the Blade movie off of their release schedule after they lost the director. It had already been delayed a bunch of times, mainly due to Covid. But, it was then reported that the movie’s script was a mess, and Mahershala Ali was getting very annoyed with the state the film was in. Some reports even suggested that he might end up leaving the project. That would be terrible because I think he’s the perfect actor to play the role.
Thankfully, it seems like Marvel Studios has found the person they want to helm the movie. Bratton is an interesting director, and his feature film directorial debut, The Inspection, is getting very good reviews. There’s a lot of good buzz surrounding the movie. The movie premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, and it got nothing but good reviews from the critics at the festival. So, it seems as though Marvel has found yet another up-and-coming director to helm one of their big tentpole movies.

They’ve done this in the past with filmmakers such as Ryan Coogler, Taika Waititi, James Gunn, Chloe Zhao and most recently Nia DaCosta who’s currently making The Marvels. This is something that Marvel loves to do, and it did seem as though they were doing something similar with the Blade movie’s previous director, Bassam Tariq. Tariq had previously made a great film called Mogul Mowgli which starred Riz Ahmed. Ahmed delivered an incredible performance in that film, and Tariq has been showing a lot of promise.
However, it sounds like the film’s script was a big issue. They’ve been trying to sort it out behind the scenes, and I’m hoping they really get it in good shape before they start filming the movie. I also wonder whether the film will succeed if it’s not R-rated. Blade is a violent character, and he’s a vampire hunter.
What do Vampires do? They drink blood and kill people. Blood is a no-no if you want to make a movie that’s PG-13, which is what all Marvel movies up to this point have been. The first R-rated MCU movie will reportedly be Deadpool 3. Things might change in the MCU after that film is released.
