The Oscars nominations were announced yesterday, and it was revealed that Marvel Studios’ Black Panther 2 (Wakanda Forever) received five nominations at the 2023 event. This isn’t a bad haul for Marvel Studios at all, and there was one nomination that was a genuine first for the studio.

Ryan Coogler’s Marvel film ended up being the studio’s first-ever acting nod at the Oscars. Angela Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Marvel movie.

Black Panther 2 was also nominated for Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, Make-up & Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects.

However, even though that’s quite an impressive achievement for the movie, it has to be said that these five nominations are down from its predecessor, as 2018’s Black Panther received seven total nods four years ago.

That said, the fact that Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress is a huge coup for the studio and great news for the actress herself. Marvel has never before received an acting nomination at the Oscars, and this could be the start of something new for the studio.

Before now, these films weren’t really seen as ‘performance-lead’ movies. Marvel’s nominations have all come in what are often described as the ‘technical categories’.

Before now, no Marvel Studios performance had ever been nominated for an Academy Award. There are only a few performances in comic book movies that have been awarded Oscar nominations, and they both ended up winning the awards.

I’m talking about, of course, Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger, who were both nominated for their portrayals of the Joker in Joker and The Dark Knight, respectively.

Black Panther 2 will look to continue the franchise’s winning ways in the best costume design category, as Ruth E. Carter won for the first film in 2019. It goes up against Babylon, Elvis, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Which nominations could the movie end up winning?

Camile Friend and Joel Harlow’s impressive make-up and hairstyling work faces off against Heike Merker and Linda Eisenhamerova of All Quiet on the Western Front, Naomi Donne, Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine of The Batman, and Adrien Morot, Judy Chin and Anne Marie Bradley of The Whale.

However, Black Panther 2’s biggest test will arguably come in the best visual effects category. It’s going up against The Batman and Avatar: The Way of WaterTop Gun: Maverick and All Quiet on the Western Front.

As for the Best Original Song category, Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” is seen by many in the industry as the early frontrunner for the Oscar. The song will be up against “Applause” from Tell It like a Woman, “Naatu Naatu” from RRR, “This Is A Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once, and “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick.

The 95th Oscars take place on Sunday, March 12th. Are you ready for it?
