Warner Bros. Pictures together with Plan B Entertainment, Tim Burton Productions and KatzSmith Productions has given Beetlejuice 2 a 2024 release date.

Perhaps in what likely seems to be movie production limbo, the sequel to the well-loved film finally gets out and could just actually venture into the real world. Ever since the release of the movie Beetlejuice in 1988, production has always been in development and director Tim Burton has always been hopeful that it will happen.

Finally, when Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment picked up the project, things were rolling for Warner Bros. Pictures to consider the sequel to happen.

Variety reports that the sequel to the 1988 classic Beetlejuice now has a definite release date, that being September 6, 2024. The production will be due to arrive in theatres in a little over a year. That is precisely 13,310 days from the release date of the first movie, which was March 29, 1988.

It was 1990, two years after the blockbuster film that starred Michael Keaton as the ghoulish troublemaker when the development of the sequel began. Burton came in contact with several writers for a sequel.

The first one was Jonathan Gems, who wrote a sequel titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. At the time, Gems had 1987 White Mischief and 1980 Morrison in Ireland to his name as a writer. In his sequel story, the Deetz was moving to Hawaii and inadvertently disturbing an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna. The spirit causes trouble, and Beetlejuice saves the day.

Both Keaton and Winona Ryder already agreed to do the sequel at the time with the condition that Burton would be at the helm. However, these were coinciding with the development of Burton’s Batman movie, also starring Keaton.

Years later, the initial story got rewritten by Daniel Waters and Pamela Norris. Once more, the sequel had a need for a rewrite that Kevin Smith turned down after choosing to work on Superman Lives.

The repeated delays and years that went by became the first sequel story’s undoing. By 1997, writer Gems stated:

The Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian script is still owned by The Geffen Company and it will likely never get made. You really couldn’t do it now anyway. Winona is too old for the role, and the only way they could make it would be to totally recast it.

By 2011, Seth Grahame-Smith, a collaborator of Burton for Dark Shadows, wrote with David Katzenberg and meant to produce Beetlejuice 2. Grahame-Smith said he wanted:

…a story that is worthy of us actually doing this for real, something that is not just about cashing in, is not just about forcing a remake or a reboot down someone’s throat.

It was this story from KatzSmith Productions that is now the basis of the upcoming sequel. From which, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will draft a screenplay from Mike Vukadinovich’s 2017 rewrite.

At present, Movie Insider displays that the September 6, 2024 date has Beetlejuice 2 premiering at the same time as that of Marvel Studios’ Blade starring Mahershala Ali.

Through the years of its development, the story of the sequel has drastically changed. We even featured an article presenting an AI’s take on Beetlejuice 2. I appreciate the fact that they are going for a story that takes place 36  years after the first movie.

There is positive anticipation to see the new characters in the movie, particularly Lydia Deetz’s daughter, to be played by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega. Likewise, I am also looking forward to seeing Beetlejuice’s wife be portrayed by Matrix and Mafia Mamma star Monica Bellucci. Joining new actors for the sequel are Justin Theroux and Willem Dafoe.

Meanwhile, Keaton and Ryder will reprise their respective roles together with Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice 2.
