The news first broke via The Lonely Island’s Instagram account, of which Samberg is a member. The post featured a caption stating, “Jorm and Andy are ‘in’ this!!” laid over the film’s poster. However, at that stage, there was no official confirmation from Marvel, leaving fans in suspense about Samberg’s exact role.
This suspense was finally broken when Marvel made an official announcement on the Twitter account for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Here, they confirmed that Samberg would be lending his voice to a key character in the upcoming sequel, bringing to life the iconic Scarlet Spider, also known as Ben Reilly.
Unravelling the Scarlet Spider
Ben Reilly, the character that Samberg will be voicing, has an interesting backstory. Introduced initially in a two-year-long comic storyline that started in October 1994, Reilly was an instrumental part of the infamous Clone Saga event.
In this storyline, the mad scientist Miles Warren, who also goes by the name of the Jackal, creates multiple clones of Peter Parker, all of whom are meant to rival Spider-Man himself. Each clone possesses Parker’s memories, leading them to believe they are the genuine article for a period.
Ben Reilly was one of these clones and was among the first to realise his true identity. After the complicated event concluded, Reilly took on a new identity, adopting the persona of the Scarlet Spider, thus carving out a unique space for himself within the Spider-Verse.

The first sighting of the Scarlet Spider was in some promotional materials for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse released in October 2022. His logo subsequently appeared in January of the following year.
Despite this early glimpse, there is precious little footage available to fans of Samberg’s portrayal of the Spider. Sony is keeping tight-lipped about his role, with only a single still of Samberg’s Spidey released to the public so far. This level of secrecy has led to speculation that the Scarlet Spider will have a significant part to play in Miles Morales’ story this time around. Perhaps he will be one of the many Spidey Variants, an outcast that connects to his complicated cloning history.
As for the character’s personality, given Samberg was selected for the role, it’s highly likely that his trademark humour will be preserved, adding a light-hearted touch to the Scarlet Spider’s character.
Fans of the Spider-Verse and Samberg alike are eagerly awaiting the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, due to hit theatres on Friday, 2nd June. As we approach the release date, anticipation is building, and the excitement is palpable. With Samberg’s comedic touch, it promises to be a thrilling addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
