Once again Andrew Garfield will lead a film project that Mel Gibson will be directing, which is one that depicts one of the world’s most pivotal points in history.
It will be the second time that the actor and actor-director will be working together on a dramatic movie. The first project they have worked on was the 2016 Hacksaw Ridge. Quite successfully, the movie collected critical acclaim and gained numerous nominations for the Academy Awards.
Hacksaw Ridge placed Garfield on equal footing in praiseworthy performances of actors that year. It gave him his first Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in 2017. Five years later, he again gained a nomination for the same category for his performance in Tick, Tick… BOOM!
Aside from Garfield’s critically acclaimed performance in Hacksaw Ridge, the movie also placed yet another spotlight on Gibson as director. The Oscar-winning Braveheart actor-producer-director was also nominated for Best Achievement in Directing the 2016 film.
Interestingly, Hacksaw Ridge was a World War II movie about an American Army Medic named Desmond T. Doss. Garfield portrayed Doss who refused to kill people during his time and became the first man in the history of the United States of America to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a gun.

It seems that World War II calls on Andrew Garfield and Mel Gibson together again as Giant Freakin Robot reports that the two are on board to work on another movie. The said project is entitled The Nightingale.
According to the report, Garfield will play a resistance fighter against the Nazi’s to save soldiers. Speculations arise as his character could either be French or Polish based on the detail that he is a “resistance fighter”.
Furthermore, while they claim that Gibson will be directing the film, it is not certain whether he will be performing in some capacity in front of the camera as well. The veteran Oscar winning director has been known to star and direct, even produce, his films. As such, there is more than a slim chance that he may also portray a role in the project.
There is a historical fiction of the same title depicting two sisters in France during WWII. Written by Kristin Hannah published by St. Martin’s Press in 2015. The novel was inspired by a Belgian woman’s story, Andree de Jongh, who came to aid Allied pilots escape after crashing into Nazi territory.
If the historical fiction is to be influential to the project in development for Garfield and Gibson, it is possible that Garfield will not be its only lead star. In the book, The Nightingale was the codename of the woman named Isabelle Rossignol. She was the one who helped the Allied forces against the Nazis.
Her father came forward and falsely confessed to being The Nightingale in order to save her. Garfield’s role could be one that is of any significant relation to Isabelle.
But only if that is what the developing project is.
The book was already being made into a film by TriStar Pictures, with plans of having sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning to star together. The movie was supposed to be directed by Melanie Laurent and to be written by Dana Stevens. The movie was removed from TriStar’s release schedule on October 2021.

It is perfectly understandable if the two artists Garfield and Gibson come together again for another movie. Much as they have worked together before, it is indicative of how much they have come to understand each other professionally. And because it will be set at the same time period only in a different place or situation, I do believe that certain measures of change will take place but not altogether drastic.
The reported project in development that Garfield and Gibson are said to be working on has yet to make their official announcements.
Andrew Garfield recently starred in Under the Banner of Heaven for Hulu. He is currently filming a romance movie titled We Live in Time directed by John Crowley. The actor is also set to star in a mini series for FX titled Hot Air. He’ll be portraying Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group to be directed by David Leitch.
Meanwhile, Gibson has many projects in line. He’s set to show up in the John Wick prequel spin-off The Continental, Boys of Summer, Desperation Road, Informant and Boneyard. IMDb also lists Lethal Weapon 5 for Gibson’s upcoming projects as an actor-director.
Gibson is also working on a sequel of The Passion of the Christ (2004) titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection which tells the events that happened within three days after the crucifixion. Production of the film is set to start within the year.
