Amazon Is Looking To Spend $1 Billion On A New TV Show Called The Three-Body Problem

According to reports, Amazon is about to spend over $1 billion on a new TV show called The Three-Body Problem which is utterly insane!

Amazon has been making original TV shows and movies for quite some time now. We’ve already seen Fortitude, Absentia, The Man in High Castle, The Tick, Sneaky Peteand we also know that they’re about to start a Lord of the Rings series as well as a Conan The Barbarian one. It’s all about original content now and who can make the best TV shows and movies. Netflix seems to be a bit ahead on that front with shows like Stranger Things, Orange Is The New Black, House of Cards, Black Mirror, Mindhunter and The Crown garnering praise from many viewers and critics alike.

However, Amazon is looking to step up its game in that department in an effort to go toe-to-toe with the Internet streaming giant that is Netflix. According to the Finacial Times (via GeekTyrant), Amazon is about to drop $1 billion on a new TV show called The Three-Body Problem.

The show will be based on a book by Liu Cixin which has two sequels: The Dark Forest and Death’s End. Together they are known as The Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy. Here’s the first book’s official synopsis:

Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

It certainly sounds epic, and the fact that it takes place in China must also be a pretty big pull for Amazon who’ll be looking to tap into that Chinese market. The book’s author, Liu Cixin, is also a nine-time winner of the Galaxy Award (which is China’s most prestigious literary science fiction award) and winner of the Hugo Award. It’s safe to say that he’s a pretty big deal in China and that many people will be looking very carefully at how Amazon tackles this project. Hollywood has been criticised in the past of Whitewashing, especially recently with regards to Asian properties such as Ghost In The Shell.

Amazon is already reportedly spending $500 million on the Lord of the Rings TV series, but they are a company that has cash to burn.
