It’s being reported that an animated Alien TV show is in the works for Netflix, which has me scratching my head a bit. Let me explain why.
First off, I wanted to reveal that this news came from Giant Freakin Robot.
OK, so before I get into what Giant Freakin Robot have been saying about an animated Alien TV show potentially coming to Netflix, let me explain why I’m a bit dubious about this news.
It comes down to the fact that Alien is now a franchise owned by Disney.
They already announced at the Disney Investor’s Day presentation that they were making an Alien live-action series that would be coming to Hulu in the US.
It sounds like the series will be coming to Disney Plus STAR in Europe, which is great news.

So, the idea of an animated Alien TV show coming to Netflix just sounds a bit odd to me.
Why would Disney agree to license the property to Netflix when they’re making their own Alien live-action series for Hulu?
With Disney now owning the rights to the property, they likely don’t want to have their name directly attached to an animation project that could be seen as R-rated or TV-MA. Licensing it out to Netflix could provide a buffer for that issue.
What doesn’t really make much sense here though is that Disney can now make R-rated properties and release them on Hulu and/or Disney Plus STAR.
