It’s been revealed that the script for 28 Months Later has been finished and Danny Boyle thinks now is the right time to get the film made. The first movie in the ’28’ franchise featured a breakout performance from Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy. This was in the British horror movie 28 Days Later back in 2002, and the movie also gave 007-star Naomi Harris a big break.
28 Days Later was followed by a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, which starred Imogen Poots, Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Renner and Rose Byrne. The sequel was released in 2007 and the world was left in disarray. So, the question remains, will we get to see a third movie in this zombie franchise?

Director of the first movie, Danny Boyle, has often talked about wanting to return to the franchise, however, other projects have got in the way of him making another film in this particular universe. Boyle was also waiting for the right story, and it seems as though Alex Garland, the writer of the first film, has finished a script for what’s being referred to as 28 Months Later.
According to Variety, Garland’s script for 28 Months Later was written years ago and Boyle called it “a lovely idea,” adding, “I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?”
So, Garland has finalised a script and Boyle is very much “tempted” to direct it. There aren’t many details on the movie’s script, however, we can confirm that the film will be set in the United Kingdom. However, there’s no word yet on whether any characters from the previous two films will return.
Could Danny Boyle direct the movie?

Could we end up seeing the likes of Cillian Murphy – whose character was last seen heading for the Lake District – or maybe even Imogen Posts. However, it’s still not certain whether her character survived 28 Weeks Later.
Well, here’s what Murphy had to say about possibly returning for 28 Months Later:
Every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it. Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me.
Garland then added:
[28 Months Later] might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.
In 28 Days Later we saw that the zombie virus has spread into Paris and was heading across the continent of Europe. I’m pretty sure that following the Covid-19 pandemic, Alex Garland has come up with some brilliant and terrifying ideas about what could happen in the third film in what could be a pretty incredible zombie trilogy.
