1899 recently landed on Netflix, and it’s already taking the streaming platform by storm, and fans are now wondering when 1899 Season 2 will be released. Well, we’ve been doing some digging and one of the very first questions we need to try and answer before we can come up with a release date for the second season is, is it even happening? That’s often the first question you have to ask when discussing new Netflix shows.
Netflix has this annoying habit of not letting its subscribers know in advance whether we can expect a second season of their new shows. It’s really frustrating because it means that we can end up watching these new shows and getting into them, only for Netflix to then decide that they won’t be making another season. This has been happening a lot recently. We’ve seen the likes of Archive 81, Resident Evil and First Kill were all shows that were released this year, and ones that I personally got into. However, Netflix decided to cancel all three of these series after just one season.
Is 1899 Season 2 happening on Netflix?

Before we get into the weeds of whether 1899 Season 2 is happening or not, let’s talk about what this new series is all about. I know, it’s a bit odd to do because I’m sure that most people reading this article would have already watched the series. However, there might be some people here who are just interested in knowing whether more seasons of the show are coming before they become invested in it.
So, here’s the show’s plot synopsis (via Netflix):
1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.
1899’s showrunners are Jantje Friese (who also wrote the series), and Baran bo Odar, who also directed some of the show’s episodes. They also both served as executive producers on the first season. Interestingly, during an interview with IndieWire, Baran suggested that he and Jantje already have ideas for a Season 2 and a Season 3. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
Season 1 is about establishing a big theme, a big thing. Let’s see if there’s a Season 2, and then we’ll start playing with that theme, and have a resolution ideally in the third season.
Moreover, the pair also worked on Netflix’s hit German series, Dark, which was critically acclaimed and got a bunch of seasons. So, all signs point towards Netflix giving 1899 Season 2 the greenlight relatively soon.
When could season 2 be released?

So, when could season 2 be released on Netflix? We still don’t know because the second season hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. That said, I would suggest that the second season could be released towards the end of 2023. However, it could end up being released in 2024. I would suggest that it would be earlier in 2024 rather than later.
The first season took around six months to film, between May 2021 to November 2021. This means that a whole year elapsed from then until the actual release in November 2022. So, if they renew the show within the next few weeks and get production started in 2023, then I would expect to see the second season in 2024. There have been some outlets suggesting that the second season could be released in 2025. However, I think that might be a bit of a stretch.

As for what could happen in the second season, if you’ve finished the first season, you will already know that the second season promises some pretty big changes. It seems as though Season 2 is going to feature a 200-year time jump after the characters realise that they’re not in 1899 after all. It’s revealed that they are travelling through the stars on an as-yet-undisclosed mission.
So, Season 2 will be a very different prospect from what we saw in the first season, and that’s ok with me!
Who will star in 1899 Season 2?

The show’s first season had a very big cast. As for who might be starring in the second season, it would all depend on who survived the first season. That said, the series loves to time-hop a bit, just like Dark did. It’s a sci-fi show, meaning some supposedly ‘dead’ characters could return for another season. If you’ve reached the end of the final episode in the first season, then you’ll know exactly what I mean by this.
