10 Films You Should Watch To Get Into The Halloween Spirit

It’s October, which means it’s Halloween month, the month when we scare ourselves silly by watching horror movies. Here are 10 films you should watch to get you into the Halloween spirit.

There’s nothing better than sitting down to watch a good horror flick. OK, so that sentiment is not shared by everyone in the world. Alessia for instance, the co-host of our podcast, Small Screen’s Film Club, does not share my love of horror movies and can think of a million things she would rather do than watch The Exorcist with me on Halloween. Yet, there are many people out there who enjoy the feeling of being scared, and there are films that do it far better than others.

2017 has actually been a very strong year for horror movies. We’ve had IT (which I loved), Get Out (which I also loved), Annabelle: Creation, Raw, Hounds of Love, Split, It Comes At Night, and Netflix recently released their adaptation of Stephen King’s book, Gerald’s Game, which is well worth a watch. So far, 2017 has been a strong year for horror and hopefully, it’ll continue to surprise and scare us (the movies, hopefully not the year).

October is a very special month on any horror enthusiast’s calendar. It’s the time of the year when we get to watch horror movies all month long, because, you know, it’s Halloween month. As if we need to give ourselves an excuse to watch the creepiest, spookiest, unsettling, goriest, most deprived and disgusting films we can lay our hands on.

Yet, we do have one when it comes to October, and these 10 films are perfect viewing material for this Halloween season. Not only are all these films horror movies (or at least horror-inflected), but they do take place during, or involve, Halloween. Check them out for yourselves below, if you dare. MUHAHAHAHA! (OK, maybe I went a bit too far then, but please enjoy the list and make sure you watch a few of them this October.)

The Exorcist (1973)

Halloween (1978)

The Amityville Horror (1979)

The Changeling (1980)

Poltergeist (1982)

Creepshow (1982)

Lady In White (1988)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Ginger Snaps (2000)

Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

There you have it. These 10 films should safely (or not so safely) see you through the Halloween month of October. Happy watching. Don’t get too scared. However, not all of these movies are strictly horror films, so you can give yourself a bit of a break from the unrelenting horror.

Which films do you like to watch during the spookiest of months? Let us know in the comments below.
