The Venom movie, starring Tom Hardy, has officially started shooting today. It’ll be the first of Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off movies.
Spider-Man: Homecoming brought the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man back into the hearts and minds of the cinema-going population. After having seen three mediocre Spider-Man movies, we were starting to worry that Marvel’s most iconic superhero might never get the on-screen depiction we deserved (barring Spider-Man 1 and 2 of course). But then Tom Holland came around and with the film’s success comes a whole slew of Spider-Man spin-off movies which will feature some of the wall-crawler’s best know foes and anti-heroes and will be headed up by Sony Studios. Marvel is not involved with these projects. The first one of these Spider-Man spin-off movies will be Venom, starring Tom Hardy as the titular character, a.k.a. Eddie Brock.

We first learnt about Hardy’s casting a while back and today was the first official day of shooting the movie. This was announced via the Venom movie’s official Twitter account along with a picture with a smiling Tom Hardy who seems to be very ready to play the role of Venom. The movie will be directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer and he’ll be working from a script written by Scott Rosenberg (Con Air, High Fidelity, Gone in 60 Seconds) and Jeff Pinkner (Lost, Fringe, The Dark Tower). Tom Hardy will be joined by Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate and Reid Scott, yet there’s no word yet regarding who they’ll be playing in the flick.
2018 is already heating up to be one of the best years on record for comic book movies. Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Aquaman, The New Mutants, Black Panther, The Incredibles 2, Ant-Man and The Wasp and X-Men: Dark Phoenix are all hitting our movie screens next year. 2018 will also see films like Solo: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Pacific Rim Uprising, Ready Player One and Annihilation come to cinemas. I’m pretty sure I’ve missed a few. Let me know which movies you are looking forward to in 2018 in the comments below.
In the meantime, we still have Thor: Ragnarok, Justice League and Star Wars: The Last Jedi to come this year, which is darn exciting.
Venom is set to hit cinemas on October 5th, 2018.
