Rian Johnson has answered fans questions on whether Billy Dee Williams’ Lando Calrissian will be turning up in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
WARNING: There are minor SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Last Jedi in this article.
People just love Lando Calrissian. Despite the fact that he betrayed Han Solo in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, people still love the character that Billy Dee Williams played so well in the original Star Wars saga. He had a redemptive story arc and quickly realised the error of his ways and then became a true hero. There’s something very special about Lando and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Donald Glover does with the role in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Yet, people are still desperate to see Billy Dee Williams return to the role and were hoping that we might get to see him turn up in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Johnson was asked whether Lando will be making an appearance in The Last Jedi during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. His answer brought an abrupt end to our hopes. “No, and I don’t want fans to get their hopes up,” said writer/director Rian Johnson. “He’s not in the film and it was never really something that came up. I mean, I loved that character. It would have been fun to see him, but it’s just not something that ever really had a place in the story.”
So there you have it. Lando Calrissian will not be in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Williams has been campaigning pretty hard to get his character back into the Star Wars franchise, and in some ways, he succeeded through the fact that Glover will be playing a younger version of Lando in Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Yet, it looks like Williams himself won’t get a chance to don the cape once more. It’s sad, yet I do understand that Lucasfilm wants to remove themselves slightly from the Star Wars old guard, that said, all the secondary characters and Lando was, for all intents and purposes, a secondary character.
