It’s been revealed that Netflix is developing a new anime series based on Magic: The Gathering with Joe and Anthony Russo.
I’m going to be honest here, I’m not very familiar with Magic: The Gathering. I do know that it’s a very popular card game, but that’s about it I’m afraid.
However, I do know The Russo Brothers’ work and I’m an avid watcher of Netflix series and always get excited when a new one is announced.
It’s especially exciting when they announce a new series based on a rather geeky property. I got excited when they revealed that they would be making a The Witcher series, even though I haven’t read the books or graphic novels. I have played the game a bit, but I’m told they’re very different.
This morning, it was revealed that Netflix is developing a new animated series with the directors of Avengers: Endgame, The Russo Brothers.
They’ve proven themselves to be very skilled at making big blockbuster movies, but this will be something very different for Joe and Anthony Russo.
They haven’t been involved in animation before, yet I’m sure they’ll excel at that as well as everything else they set their minds to.
Netflix sent out a press release announcing the news, and there was a quote from the Russo Brothers in which they expressed their excitement to be involved with the project.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us.”
It sounds like they’re real fans of the card game and that this is going to be something very personal for the brothers, which is always a good sign and a good place to start off from.
The script for Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering is being penned by Henry Gilroy, who worked on Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He’ll be joined by Jose Molina, who’s worked on The Tick and Agent Carter, so it seems like the scripts in good hands.
The series will be animated by a company called Octopie, and according to their website, they’ve worked alongside visionary creators including Robert Rodriguez and the Russo Brothers. It’ll be interesting to see what they can create together.
Meanwhile, why not have a read of our articles on the 5 actors who could play Catwoman in The Batman, the 5 actors who could play The Penguin in the movie, and the 5 movies you should watch if you still think Robert Pattinson won’t be a good Batman.
You can also have a read of our reviews of Aladdin, Detective Pikachu, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Avengers: Endgame, Hellboy and Glass.
There’s no word yet on when we should expect the Magic: The Gathering series to land on Netflix.
