There is a new rumour suggesting that director Matt Reeves has an actor in mind to play the Dark Knight in his Batman movie should Ben Affleck decide to leave the DCEU.
It’s been rumoured for a while now that Ben Affleck is looking for a way out of the DCEU. He recently stated that they are looking for a “graceful and cool” way of saying goodbye to the role, and that isn’t surprising. Justice League would mark the third time he’s played the role and no actor has ever played Batman on more than three occasions. It’s also a tough role to play physically and Affleck isn’t getting any younger. That said, it would be sad to see him leave the role because I honestly believe he’s done a cracking job, but it looks like he wants to.
We still don’t know whether Affleck will don the cape and cowl in Matt Reeves’ standalone Batman movie and now there’s a new rumour suggesting that he already has an actor in mind to replace our current Dark Knight. During a recent episode of John Campea’s YouTube show, the Canadian film director, producer, critic and all-around know-it-all (in a good way) admitted that he spoke to a Hollywood insider who revealed that Reeves already had an actor in mind to replace Affleck. Campea wouldn’t say who that person way (of course he didn’t), but he did say that he was surprised by the possible casting choice.
“I’m hesitant to say anything, but I talked to a Hollywood producer yesterday and they gave me the name of who Matt Reeves wants [to replace Affleck] as Batman. And, I’ve got to be honest with you, that name caught me a little bit by surprise. I called somebody else later in the day, saying ‘hey, I heard this, is there any validity to this?’ And they said ‘well, Matt does want him.’ But, that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. There’s been no movement or anything like that.”
This is by no means an official confirmation that Reeves is looking for a new actor to play Batman. It’s still unclear whether the rumours about Affleck wanting to leave the role are true or not (they’re probably are). This is all hearsay and speculation at the moment, but Campea does know a lot of Hollywood insiders and could very well be telling the truth. Recasting Batman isn’t anything new. We’ve already had Michael Keaton, who was then replaced by Val Kilmer, who was in turn ditched in favour for George Clooney. We then had Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy in which Christian Bale was Batman.
That said if DC and Warner Bros. are serious about this cinematic universe they’ve been creating then they’d have to handle this transitioning of Batman with care. Affleck’s Batman deserves a decent sendoff and the whole process should make sense.
