Ewan McGregor said that he would love to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again in a Star Wars spinoff movie but hasn’t been approached about it yet.
Lucasfilm is really ramping up these Star Wars spinoff movies. Last year we saw Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One and this year we’re getting the much-discussed Solo: A Star Wars Story which is being directed by Ron Howard. There was at one point a Boba Fett spinoff movie in the works, but that’s now a distant memory. A while back we learned that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot and The Reader) was in talks with Katheleen Kennedy to direct an Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spinoff film.
This sounds very exciting indeed. We’ll finally find out what Obi-Wan was up to during those years in between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. We do know that he was keeping an eye on Luke on Tatooine, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t do some cool stuff on the side. Thanks to Star Wars Rebels we know that killed Darth Maul whilst being in hiding, so there must be a lot of other stuff he was keeping himself busy with.
Ewan McGregor, who play Obi-Wan in the prequel movies, would be of course the logical person to play the lead role. However, after his big Golden Globe win for his performance in Fargo: Season 3 the actor was asked to comment on the current state of the movie. “There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do,” he told reporters (via The Hollywood Reporter).
It sounds like the movie is still very much in its early stages and Lucasfilm hasn’t approached McGregor yet for the role. It must only be a matter of time before we get confirmation that he’ll be starring in the movie. It’s not like they’ll recast like they did for the Han Solo spinoff movie. McGregor is the perfect age to play the role and if they’re going to do the movie it has to be now and with the Scottish actor in the lead role.
