David Ayer took some time on Twitter to reflect on Suicide Squad and admitted that Jared Leto’s Joker should have been the film’s main villain.
There was a lot wrong with Suicide Squad, and when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. The film had about 10 beginnings and just ended up being a big dark CGI mess of a movie in which the villain’s main plan was to create a big trash ring in the sky. Speaking of the film’s villain, Cara Delevigne’s Enchantress was one of the reasons why the film was so bad. She was an unimaginative villain and written terribly.That said, I’m not sure whether too much blame can be placed at Delevigne’s feet, or David Ayer’s for that matter. This film was a result of studio interference and shoddy editing.
Suicide Squad was not the film that Ayer had envisaged and he recently took to Twitter to reflect on the movie and had some pretty interesting things to say about the whole process. One person tweeted at him suggesting that the film’s main villain should have been The Joker, and Ayer agreed. Check out what he said below.

Jared Leto’s Joker is widely considered to be bad, yet not all of that is Leto’s fault. This is a product of poor writing and editing. They didn’t use the character properly and yes, he should have been the film’s main villain. I especially like Twitter user Jiwano Starshine‘s reference to the animated movie Assult on Arkham which is what Suicide Squad should have been like.
David Ayer is currently working on Gotham City Sirens which was a project started by Margot Robbie herself after having read some of the comics. One thing we can all agree on is that she’s great as Harley Quinn and deserves more screentime. She will be in Suicide Squad 2 and there’s talk of her starring in a Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off, yet it seems as though the DCEU is in a bit of disarray after Justice League’s slightly lower than expected box office takings.
